Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
